Why Suitcase
Recordings?
For a long time, I worked in established studios, as a
freelance engineer, and on occasion, I still do. But with the advance
of higher quality remote gear available in smaller packages, I've come
to believe that producing records 'on-location' is the way to go. For
many years, artists have preferred to work in their homes, or in rented
homes set up for recording. This was expensive and difficult, but the
results speak for themselves. Now, though, I can bring a top-quality
rig into your home or practice space, and make a record at a price that
competes with any worthwhile project studio.
Creative Atmosphere
Going into a traditional recording facility is exciting,
of course, but it can be intimidating, too. Trying to achieve your best
performance for posterity in a room that feels like a doctor's office,
with an engineer that you may have never met before staring at you
through a glass window can put you off your game.
You're going to be most at ease in the room where you
practice, in a space you know. I pride myself on putting the band at
ease, and blending in, like a temporary member of the band. I'm there
to capture the magic that you've created, to get your vision down on
'tape.'
A Shared Vision
I prefer to work with bands I like. It seems obvious that
an engineer or producer would do their best work if they like the
music, but in many studios, the credo is 'get the work.' I don't
believe I can do my best if I don't share the band's vision. If you
want to hear the kinds of things I work on, visit the 'Session Notes' section of the site, and
visit my music blog, Suitcase Music. I think
it's pretty obvious the sort of things I'm into, and what I'm not.
A Fantastic Deal
Since I don't operate a facility, my rate is about 1/3 of
what I would charge if I had a room to pay for. I own all my own gear,
so no lease payments to make. I am a one man operation, so no
employees. No rent or build-out, and minimal overhead means the savings
get passed on to the artist. I like to be able to spend as long on a
record as it takes, rather than have an artist stressing out over every
dollar, every minute that goes by.
And Of Course, The
Guarantee
I've been doing this long enough to know that you're
going to be happy. I'm so confident that I'll give you this guarantee:
If at the end of the day, you don't feel like continuing, that the
project isn't going well, I'll delete the work we've done, and you
don't owe me a penny.
Let's Get
Started
Your recordings are how most new fans are going to hear
you first. And CDs and downloads are where you're likely to make a
large percentage of your income. Don't waste another day with sub-par
recordings on your website, and don't sell another CD with the apology
that "It didn't come out as well as we'd have liked."
