'Duluth'

This session was a fun one. We did the recording in Shawn’s apartment in downtown Phoenix, a smallish space, with carpeted floors, etc. We tracked the acoustic guitars first, I used GT44 mics up close, one above the 12th fret, the other off the sound board, looking at the bridge area. These mics went through the PM1000 channels, with a little eq. I also setup an Oktava MK219 as a room mic, going through the GT Brick. Once we had the acoustic down, we added the electric guitar parts. I used a KEL HM1 on the amp, which was a small practice amp. The bass guitar was tracked through this same amp, both went through the PM1000s, as did pretty much everything except the room mic. Vocals were recorded though the GT44, with a touch of midrange boost on the PM1000s, then the backing vocals were added. As soon as this song was tracked, we set about mixing, which went very quickly. I used a bit of compression, and my usual Tape Compression algorithm on the guitars and bass. EQ was minimal, though the reverb channel was heavily band passed between about 800hz and 3k. I like reverb, but full band reverb tends to sound fake. We did the whole session in under 5 hours, but it came out really great.
